I was drawn to painting this sitter because it reminded me of one artist who shaped my artistic identity—Antonio Mancini. Something about his self-portrait has always stayed with me: his unapologetic presence, bold and direct, yet deeply sensitive, with an incredible finesse. The green jacket wasn’t just an afterthought but essential to the composition. I wanted it to do more than clothe the sitter; I wanted it to support them, to act almost like a pedestal, giving them presence and weight. Through various paint applications, I worked to capture that balance—between strength and subtlety, boldness and delicacy—conveying both the raw immediacy of the moment and the depth beneath the surface.

‘Our Beating Heart’ - I visit London frequently as part of my work as an artist, and the excitement I feel when I’m in my own capital city increases with every trip. The scene, at this time of day never fails to take my breath away, it stops me in my tracks. In recent months, I have stood in this place and sketched its skyline, sometimes simply or sometimes with much greater detail. I have spent time looking, learning, understanding times of the day and how the landscape and Thames River below changes under different light conditions. The buzz of London is palpable here. I stand quietly sketching with people walking along the bridge behind me, arriving at the same point and you can hear them gasp. This makes me smile because I am a stranger to them, but we feel a shared excitement. When I work outdoors, I often use earbuds to reduce the noise around me, but it still allows me to hear and sense what is going on. I become more aware of my breathing, my heartbeat and how it slows as I sink into deeper concentration to paint. For me, there is a connection between my love of this view, the way it makes me feel and the changes it brings about in my own physicality when I pause to capture it. The narrow band of light that changes and travels from left to right on Waterloo Bridge illuminates the surface of the Thames River. The light band changes from a warm pink coral to an electric blue and at moving points, it pulses if you look carefully. This work is my favourite London view and the ‘Beating Heart’ of our great capital city. (Please Note: The main image here is unvarnished, the the secondary image being varnished. Living Oceans

This artwork is a silkscreen print created with four distinct layers, each meticulously hand-drawn on Tervakoski tracing paper using black Posca pens. Once completed, the layers were placed on silkscreens coated in photo emulsion and exposed to a lightbox to transfer the designs. The resulting print uses a combination of Daler Rowney System 3 Acrylic paint and printing medium in a 50:50 ratio, applied to hot-pressed watercolour paper. This results in a vibrant, multi-layered artwork that captures the intricate, vibrant beauty of the coral. ‘Living Oceans’ explores how coral reefs are interconnected organisms with their own personalities. Inspired by Yellena James' work on nature's shapes, I created this artwork to highlight the plight of coral bleaching. Rising ocean temperatures expel algae from coral, causing bleaching, starvation and eventually death. Coral reefs, known as ‘rainforests of the ocean,’ support marine life and over half a billion people by providing food, income, and storm protection; therefore, their decline has severe global consequences. Growing up by the sea in New Zealand and Australia, I developed a passion for the ocean, further fuelled by my father’s Jacques Cousteau books. Though I didn’t pursue a marine career, I aim to raise awareness through my art. In this print, the white spaces represent the bleaching coral, symbolising its gradual loss of colour and life. This work reminds us of the ocean's vibrant beauty and the critical need to protect it as it faces environmental threats.

Walk on Water

'Walk on Water' - This painting is a studio work up from a 10 x 11 inch plein air piece. The plein air reference took about 1.5 hours and was completed during very bright, mid-morning conditions. I was looking almost right at the sun and with a calm surface on the water, the reflections of the sky and boats from the distance were beautiful. This is very much a 'say what you see' painting because this is precisely the colours my eyes were capturing as I looked into the bright light and shimmering water. I was keen to capture exactly what my eyes were interpreting from the landscape in those conditions, not what my over thinking brain wanted me to paint. The light and colour shifted and flickered, the reflections of the sailboat masts while interrupted at some points by the current, extended all the way to where I was standing on the riverbank. Every so often, the brightest flashes of sunlight would appear in the water right in front of me, this is an aspect of the work I wanted to capture specifically with the energy and direction of my brush marks. On this day my time painting felt good, I was just so happy to be there and had such a fun time. These moments you have to grab with both hands as they make you feel on top of the world. The title of this work refers to this beautiful place, my sense of joy in my work and for a few hours I felt like I could just step out and walk on that water.

Senetti Reds

“Senetti Reds” is a collaboration of figurative and abstract, something which I love painting together as both areas of art interest me. I enjoy the discipline and challenge of looking at real objects and aiming to characterise them to give form and beauty. I also appreciate the shapes and patterns in more abstracted styles and the fusing together in one painting excites me. Senetti Reds is a gouache study of a luscious magenta Senetti plant with a backdrop of beautiful silken material of harmonious colouring. Once heavily underway l felt the composition needed an extra burst of colour and the plate of mango in the foreground provides an enhanced perspective to the overall work, furthermore adding a strong colour contrast which lifts the overall imagery. The self coloured paper flowers sit on the surface in relief and add further interest and texture, their shapes inspired by the Senetti plant itself and also by the flower shape on the silken man’s lapel. The handmade paper with its undulating markings form part of the textural quality of the overall piece.

The blocks of colour echo the surrounding landscape, water and sky. They have a sense of place and atmosphere.

The narrative is focused on wildlife corridors, the importance of a network of routes between habitats to ensure diversity, and aims to resolve the tension between abstraction and figuration while encouraging open discussion. These concertina sculptures have focused my attention on the barriers to nature as I catch glimpses of insects between the folds and struggle to find empty space to draw within the marks. It's become a metaphor for the struggle in nature. I am concerned with our habit of ignoring the common, less colourful creatures, treating them as pests.

As I was leaving Tate Modern after viewing an exhibition, I suddenly noticed a tree outside the window—it looked like a painting. This inspired me to wonder: among all the visitors immersed in the exhibition, how many had actually noticed that tree outside? What if an exhibition were dedicated to that tree alone—what would it be like? And so, this painting was born. I depicted three visitors in the gallery, each maintaining a certain distance from one another, yet appearing relaxed and deep in thought. Meanwhile, the massive tree framed within the painting inside the gallery stands in the midst of winter, carrying a silent promise of rebirth.
