This painting was inspired by Maggi Hambling’s eponymous portrait (1977-1978) in which all of the items in the painting had a personal significance to the artist when her life was 'in a muddle', and by Tim Walker’s ‘Wonderful Things’ exhibition at the V&A, where images were layered with props, clues, details and tricks of light all designed to capture a moment of pure fantasy. Having moved out of London to the countryside, my life felt like it was ‘in a muddle’ too. I was disorientated by the change of circumstances. Over time, the landscape outside became my companion, and followed me inside the house. I began work on this ‘self-portrait’ by mining my experience for imagery. I made smaller drawings and watercolours of various elements in my life, and of images conjured by my children’s conversations and experiences. The resulting painting attempts to create a feeling of a dream, where things make sense emotionally rather than literally. It is not a traditional ‘self-portrait’ that pursues likeness, rather it is about an experience, a surreal merging of the internal and external world.
