Statement
I am an Artist and Illustrator who is particularly excited by idea generation and manipulating materials to share a story or message in a visual way. This can be created through composing a painting or print or making a three dimensional ‘interactive gallery’ using paper and mixed media.
Observational studies from my travels have inspired me to make visual recordings of the architecture in France and Italy where I have explored light, colour, water, and form.
I love to explore watercolour techniques; using strong pigments and bold washes to create vibrant imagery. As well as visually describing land and seascapes, I enjoy portraiture and observing the unique structures and characters of human form.
My illustrations contain playful imagery which are inspired by proverbs and homophones. I place visual metaphors within my compositions to be discovered by the viewer to promote a theme or play on words, often evoking humour in my work.
I am currently working on a series of tactile Artist Books that are created to be interactive for the viewer. Pages extend, slide, and pop up where simple book binding techniques are also used. The results include ‘portable galleries’ and illustrated sculptures. Laura recently completed an interactive illustration for an NHS Clinical Psychologist where paper mechanics enable elements to move to demonstrate an analogy about managing a chronic disease. This was aimed to support children and their families in understanding the diagnosis.
My own practice also enables me to complete commissions and immerse myself in developing my drawing and painting techniques. Drawing is an integral element in my work to envisage ideas, build compositions and record my observations. My work can be viewed at laurawyatt.co.uk
