Having lost my mum in 2024, I found empty chairs became a recurring theme in my work and it was only recently I actually realised why. It's the empty space she has left behind in our lives, the missing person.

This painting explores form through layering, abrasion and restraint. A red vessel sits centrally, partially obscured by veils of muted blue-grey paint and distressed collage. The pot is both present and disrupted, its solidity challenged by marks, scratches and areas of concealment. I build the surface through adding and sanding back, allowing earlier layers to remain visible. Fragments of aged paper and worn texture suggest history without illustrating it directly. The black linear element introduces contrast and tension, countering the weight of the vessel. I am interested in the balance between object and surface. The painting holds both structure and erosion, solidity and fragility.
