Victoria's evocative work expresses her fascination with wild locations. Having lived and practised in a number of counties in England and Wales, she seeks to harness the emotive value of memory and its reference to place. Although personal to the artist, her paintings possess a symbolic quality that resonates with the viewer.

Evolving from direct observation, these pieces often become more intuitive as they progress: an attempt to capture the moment, the diversity of the elements, a shift in atmosphere and light.

Water-based pigments may be diluted with sea or river, so that the outcome evolves from the source of the landscape. Collage may also be integrated in order to explore differing qualities of surface, echoing the physicality of the environment. 

At other times, acrylics or oils are simply laid down on canvas or board, allowing impasto and glazing techniques to be exploited, thus enabling the opportunity to observe a given location over an extended period of time.




 

Victoria was born in Oxford, where she gained her BA (Hons) in Fine Art and Publishing, followed by an MA in Illustration at Brighton. This journey underpinned the fluid boundaries between the disciplines, however her obsession has remained with the land and sea.

After working for a number of years for a typographic design company and small publisher, Victoria became a part-time lecturer in BA (Hons) Illustration at Hereford College of Arts, concluding her teaching career as Head of Art at Monmouth School for Girls.

2020 saw her return to painting and exhibiting full time. She can now be found wandering through external and internal landscapes, in the lanes, and hedgerows, walking the hills, combing the shorelines and working in her studio.
