Oil on canvas
h: 100 w: 150 d: 3 (cms).
Commissioned by the Centre for Appearance Research Appearance Matters conference, where Amit Ghose (the sitter) was a panellist, this work was unveiled there. As per our agreement CAR and Amit each have a reproduction to keep, and the original painting is mine to exhibit and sell. Amit had a strong voice in the way he is represented, and is very happy with the result. As a social media influencer he has shared the portraiture process with enthusiasm. We subsequently featured together on the CAR podcast discussing the portrait project.

PLEASE NOTE this is bigger than the maximum admissible size. Contrary to the dimensions entered on this form, it is 170x240x5cm framed. To make matters worse (in the interests of transparency) I have entered it into the RA Summer Exhibition (19/3/25 is the date when the RA announce their shortlist, at which point it will almost certainly be rejected). I hope you aren't annoyed that I've included it in my entry here, because it will almost certainly be available (confirmed on 19th), and really the SWA is where I feel it belongs. I would of course fully understand if you didn't want to allow it as an entry, in which case please consider it to be simply supporting my application for membership, and accept my apologies for timewasting. Based very closely on Gericault's Raft Of The Medusa, I used models, friends, family, and samples from paintings by historic women artists to reconstruct Gericault's composition. The 2nd image is tilted, during varnishing, hopefully showing the painting style, and the two Afghan women (easily overlooked in the full painting) who replace Gericault's two figures secluded by the mast. The 3rd image shows my editorial process, experimenting with 'flipping' Sirani's Timoclea (I also changed her well to be one of the kegs on the original raft painting). I bought the rights to the Women's World Cup 2022 rugby lineout photo from the photographer Dave Lintott. The overarching theme is the common experience of women across time and place.
