When visiting Munich two summers ago, I spotted an elderly man in a sweets shop in the Galerie Munchen off Marienplatz. His movements were slow but there was a determination in his eyes that intrigued me. A few minutes later, I spotted him with his wife, presumably, both searching for their desired item together. They reminded me of my beloved grandparents, the “dance” they had together after 70 years of marriage. A few moments later, I saw him scrambling to the register, arms loaded with packages of Walkers biscuits, mission accomplished. Made me miss my grandparents. This painting honours their memory as much as the couple in the scene.

Likely an actor hired by the museum, this man was perfectly staged on the shadow side of the ottoman where a visitor enters the room, making one see only the silhouette of his still figure. It was purposefully magical. I photographed several images and later created two paintings, one a profile including the figure resting his hands on a cane, which sold to a collector in Washington D.C. In this posterior view, its ‘sibling’, I included a second figure in the background to create a relational aspect for the viewer to speculate and analyse.
