The horse and rider has long been a symbol of reason over emotion. Here this idea is pushed as the female rider balances precariously as the horse moves. There is nothing reasonable about this. She is wearing unsuitable clothing and performing acrobatics. The horse is unbridled and could easily decide not to cooperate. Success relies on a bond, a fragile connection. They are together, with reason and emotion being equal.

The woman lies on the four-legged bird creature which is perhaps a figment of her imagination. The bird like a hummingbird is the symbol of good fortune or a changing of luck, and also of freedom beauty and fragility. It is combined with a stick legged creature which may be a costume for some kind of performance and in which we must suspend our disbelief to enter into the spirit of the art. The woman wears a hat like one my mother wore when trying but failing to learn to swim when I was very small
